How It Works
Enter your date of birth and the date you want your age measured on. Leave the second date as today for your current age, or set it to the cut-off date from an exam, job or admission notification to check an age limit. The result shows completed years, months and days, plus the totals in weeks, days, hours and minutes.
How the Calculator Counts Years, Months and Days
Age on official forms is counted in completed calendar units, not in blocks of 365 days, and that is what this page does. It subtracts the years first, then the months, then the days. When the day of the as-on date is smaller than your birth day, it borrows one month and adds the number of days in the month before the as-on date. When the month comes out negative, it borrows one year and adds twelve months. Someone born on 15 August 2000 is therefore 26 years, 1 month and 9 days old on 24 September 2026.
The totals below the main result come from the exact number of days between the two dates. Total weeks is that figure divided by seven, total months is completed years times twelve plus completed months, and hours and minutes are the day count multiplied out. Only the calendar dates are used, so the time of day and your time zone never change the answer.
Born on 29 February?
A leap-day birthday exists only once every four years. In other years this calculator treats the year as complete on 1 March, the first day after 28 February, which is the convention most organisations follow, and the next-birthday countdown points to 1 March in those years. The total-days figure is unaffected, so nobody loses a day. A few bodies treat 28 February as the birthday instead; if a deadline hinges on it, check the rule with the office concerned.
Age difference between two people
Enter the older person's date of birth as the Date of Birth and the younger person's date of birth in the As On field. The result is the exact gap between them in years, months and days, which is handy for sibling gaps, school admission pairs and insurance proposals that ask for a spouse's age.
Age As On a Cut-off Date: Exam, Job and Admission Forms
Government exams, recruitment notices and school admissions never ask how old you are today. Each notification fixes one cut-off date and measures every applicant's age on that date, so two people applying on the same day can fall on opposite sides of the limit. The date is different for every exam and can change from year to year, so read it from the notification itself rather than from last year's form. The Civil Services Examination, for example, counts age as on 1 August of the exam year, while voter registration uses four qualifying dates a year (1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October).
To check a limit, put the cut-off date in the As On field and read the completed years. A rule written as "must have attained 21 years and must not have attained 32 years as on 1 August 2026" is satisfied by anyone whose completed age on that date is 21 through 31. Most notifications also translate the limits into a window of birth dates ("born not earlier than 2 August 1994 and not later than 1 August 2005"), and checking your birth date against that window is the surest method. Age relaxations for reserved categories, ex-servicemen and persons with disabilities are added to the upper limit, and the notification lists them.
Insurance works the other way round. Some insurers rate a policy on age nearest birthday instead of completed years, so a person aged 34 years and 7 months may be charged the premium for 35. The proposal form says which convention applies.
Age Milestones in India (as of September 2026)
| Age | What changes |
|---|---|
| 5 and 15 | Mandatory biometric updates to a child's Aadhaar, since fingerprints and iris scans are not captured below 5. |
| 6 | Entry to Class 1 under the National Education Policy 2020. Each state and board fixes its own cut-off date for the academic year. |
| 14 | Right to free and compulsory education runs from 6 to 14. Employment of children below 14 is prohibited, and 14 to 18 year olds may not work in hazardous occupations. |
| 16 | A learner's licence for a low-powered gearless two-wheeler is possible with a guardian's consent. |
| 18 | Age of majority, the right to vote, a full driving licence, the capacity to sign contracts, a 10-year adult passport, and the legal marriage age for women. |
| 21 | Legal marriage age for men under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and the drinking age in several states. |
| 18 to 25 | The drinking age is a state subject and varies within this range; some states prohibit alcohol entirely. |
| 60 | Senior citizen for income tax (higher basic exemption under the old regime) and the retirement age for central government employees. |
| 80 | Super senior citizen for income tax purposes. |
Upper limits matter as much as lower ones. Recruitment notices, term insurance, home loans and visa categories all carry maximum ages, and each is measured on its own cut-off date.
Documents That Prove Date of Birth
- Birth certificate. Issued by the municipal or panchayat registrar under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. Since the 2023 amendment took effect on 1 October 2023, it is the single accepted proof of date of birth for anyone born on or after that date, for school admission, driving licences, voter registration, passports and government jobs.
- Class 10 board certificate or marksheet. The document most authorities ask older applicants for, because the date of birth printed by the board is treated as the school record.
- Passport. Accepted as proof of date of birth almost everywhere, and a minor's passport is valid for five years or until age 18.
- PAN card. Carries the date of birth and is accepted by banks and many employers.
- Aadhaar. Accepted for identity and address, but UIDAI treats it as proof of identity rather than of date of birth, and some authorities stopped accepting it on its own for that purpose in 2024.
Keep the date of birth identical across every document. A mismatch between a school certificate and a birth certificate is a common reason for passport and pension applications being held up, and the correction has to be made at the registrar or the board rather than at the office that spotted it.
Date Format Pitfalls
India writes dates as day, month, year (05/08/2000 is 5 August 2000). The United States writes month first, so the same string means 8 May on an American website, and a date like 05/08 is ambiguous the moment it leaves the country. Spreadsheets and databases mostly use the international order year, month, day (2000-08-05), which is also what the date fields on this page store. A few habits avoid the mix-up:
- Write the month as a word wherever a form allows it: 5 August 2000.
- On a foreign website, check the placeholder text or a sample date before you type.
- Do not type a two-digit year. 05/08/00 can be read as 1900, 2000 or 2100 by different systems.
- Use the calendar picker on this page rather than typing, so the browser stores the date unambiguously.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does this age calculator count years, months and days?
It uses calendar months, the same way official forms do. It subtracts the years, then the months, then the days, and when the day of the month is smaller than your birth day it borrows the length of the month before the as-on date. Total days, weeks and hours come from the exact number of days between the two dates.
What is my age if I was born on 29 February?
In a leap year your birthday is 29 February. In other years this calculator counts the year as complete on 1 March, the first day after 28 February, which is the convention most organisations follow. Your total days are unaffected either way.
What does age as on a date mean in exam and job notifications?
Every notification fixes one cut-off date, and your age is measured on that date rather than on the day you apply or sit the exam. Enter that date in the As On field to see your exact age on it. The notification usually also converts the limits into a date-of-birth window, which is the simplest thing to check.
Which documents prove date of birth in India?
A birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act is the primary proof, and for anyone born on or after 1 October 2023 it is the single document accepted for school admission, driving licences, voter registration and passports. Older applicants are usually asked for the Class 10 board certificate or marksheet, a passport, or a PAN card, depending on the authority.
Is Aadhaar accepted as proof of date of birth?
Not everywhere. UIDAI has said that Aadhaar is proof of identity rather than proof of date of birth, and some authorities stopped accepting it on its own for date of birth in 2024. Check the document list in the form you are filling, and keep a birth certificate or Class 10 certificate ready.
At what age can I vote, drive and marry in India?
Voting, the age of majority and a driving licence all start at 18. The legal marriage age is 18 for women and 21 for men under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. The drinking age is set by each state and ranges from 18 to 25, with some states prohibiting alcohol entirely.
Why does my age differ by a day on another website?
Calculators differ on whether the as-on date itself is counted, on how they borrow days in months of 28 to 31 days, and on the time zone they use for today. This page uses calendar dates only, so the time of day and the time zone never change the result.
